RIDDLES

You've been asked to buy 100 squeegies, using 100 dollars to do so. You may buy no more or less than 100 squeegies, and the total price must be exactly 100 dollars. There is no sales tax. Red squeegies cost $6.00. Yellow squeegies cost $3.00. Blue squeegies cost $0.10. How many of each must you buy?

 

Answer:

One red squeegie must be bought for $6.00, 29 yellow squeegies must be bought for $87.00, and 70 blue squeegies must be bought for $7.00.

       

Riddle:

An old man wanted to leave all of his money to one of his three sons, but he didn't know which one he should give it to. He gave each of them a few coins and told them to buy something that would be able to fill their living room. The first man bought straw, but there was not enough to fill the room. The second bought some sticks, but they still did not fill the room. The third man bought two things that filled the room, so he obtained his father's fortune. What were the two things that the man bought?

Answer:

The wise son bought a candle and a box of matches. After lighting the candle, the light filled the entire room.

 

Properly Punctuate this sentence:

"That that is is that that is not is not is not that it it is." 

 

Answer:

"That that is, is; that that is not, is not; is not that it? It is."

 

Puzzle:

A computer cable has seven connectors, arranged in a perfect circle -- so by rotating the plug, it can be connected to the outlet in any of seven different ways. Each of the connectors is numbered from one to seven, each number being used exactly once. The same is true for the holes in the outlet. The device that uses this cable only requires that one of the connectors match up to its corresponding hole in order to operate. How should you number the connectors on the plug and the holes in the outlet so that, no matter how the cable is rotated and plugged in, at least one connector matches up?

 

ANSWER: Number the connectors clockwise, with consecutive numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Number the holes clockwise, with every other number, then wrapping back around: 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6.

 

Puzzle:

There are two lengths of rope. Each one can burn in exactly one hour. They are not necessarily of the same length or width as each other. They also are not of uniform width (may be wider in middle than on the end), thus burning half of the rope is not necessarily 1/2 hour.

By burning the ropes, how do you measure exactly 45 minutes worth of time?

 

Answer to Puzzle:

If you light both ends of one rope, it will burn in exactly a 1/2 hour. Thus, burn one rope from both ends and the other rope from only one end. Once the one rope (which is burning from both ends) finally burns out (and you know a 1/2 hour has elapsed), you also know that the other rope (which is buring from only one end) has exactly 1/2 hour left to burn. Since you only want 45 minutes, light the second end of the rope. This remaining piece will burn in 15 minutes. Thus, totaling 45 minutes.

 

Such sadness. I really don't like to pass on sad news like this, but sometimes I need to pause and remember what life is all about. There was a great loss recently in the entertainment world. Larry LaPrise, the Detroit native who wrote the song "the Hokey Pokey" died last week at 83.  It was especially difficult for the family. They had trouble placing him in the casket.

 They'd put his right leg in and........well you know the rest.........
