Belair Swim & Racquet Articles (last posted 17 July 09)

Week 4.  Winning Team!  Belair Swim and Racquet rebounds from loss for first road win against Montpelier

BSR won 301-269, and had some exciting and close races along the way.

Grace Kelly, Jenna Morgan, Ethan Smith, and Sarah Smith were 3x winners on the day!  Biggest time drops were Timmy Radcliffe in 9-10 boys 50 free (42 seconds), Heather Kaercher in 13-14 girls 100 IM (13 seconds), Sarah Hatef in 15-18 girls 50 back (9 seconds), Michael Comer in 13-14 boys 50 Fly (6 seconds), Javier Rivera in 13-14 boys 50 Fly (4.5 sec)

BSR goes to the Bowie City Meet on Tuesday at BBT, then heads to Silver Spring Saturday.  Silver Spring heads into this weekend with a 2-2 record.

Week 3.  First loss of the season: BSR loss by 50 to Westlake Village

In their first loss of the season, Belair Swim and Racquet has reason to celebrate.  The team, overall, on the day had 43% best times, 4 pool records (G. Enoch 113-14 girls 50 Breast, G. Enoch 13-14 girls 50 Back, G. Enoch 13-14 girls 100IM, A. Enoch 15-18 boys 50 Back), and a team record in the Women's 200 Medley Relay (L. Magaw, M. Donovan, A Gehring, A Barber).  With about 30 swimmers not in attentance, due to both the holiday weekend and a travel meet for a group of year-round swimmers, a number of athletes were able to participate in events they usually do not.  BSR was loud and excited from start to finish.

Lucas Stansberry wins the award for biggest time drop of the day.  The 11-12 male dropped 30 seconds off his backstroke time!

BSR travels to Montpellier next weekend.  Montpellier achieved their first victory of the season this weekend, beating Greenbelt by 10 points.

Rain, again, shortens meet.
City Relay's will be completed at the City Meet in two weeks.

BSR had 82 members participate in the 2009 Bowie City Relays tonight, hosted by Whitehall.  This year marks the 25th time this meet has been held.  The only relay that determines the winner of the meet, the Crescendo, will occur in two weeks during the beginning of the Bowie City Meet.

The last relay before the thunder and lightening began was the 18&under Mixed 200 Medley Relay, in which Belair Swim and Racquet broke a 19-year old Bowie City Relay Meet Record by nearly 8 seconds.  The team of Caitlin Magaw, Michael Cooke, Ethan Smith, and Grace Kelly set a new record of 2:03.82 -- over 7.5 seconds faster than the old record of 2:11.27 set by Whitehall (C. Fuller B. Schumacher   K. Murphy K. Mundy) in 1990.

Congrats to Kelsey Swensen and Lindsey Magaw, who competed in their final Bowie City Relay meet!  Lindsey holds a Relay Meet record as a part of the 2003 BSR Girls' 12 and under 200M Freestyle team.

RECORD COUNT:  1 pool record, 1 team record, 2 new events for the season (200 Medley) so 4 new pool and team records there (league record, week 1 for girls), and now a city relay record.

Week 2.  Barracuda's Beat Rival Whitehall in Second Meet of Season

BSR swam a close and exciting meet this weekend, edging neighboring Whitehall by 7 points.

The team started off by winning both the Men's and Women's 200 Medley relays.  The BSR women's 200 Medley was the fastest in the PrinceMont League last week.  Geordie Enoch broke the pool and team record in the 13-14 50 Breast, her first time swimming the event this year, in a time of 36.68.  Enoch was just off the pool and team record in the 100IM.  Enoch was a three-time winner Saturday, but not alone in this accomplishment.  Other BSR three-time winners were Sarah Smith (12), Grace Kelly (15), and Ethan Smith (15).

The team is now 2-0, and heads to WOW for the 4th of July

Week 1.  BSR Off to a Strong, Soggy Start. Beats Greenbelt

Belair Swim and Racquet Club's swim team got off to a strong start in Prince-Mont Swim League Division B competititon, defeating Greenbelt in a rain-shortened meet at BSR's pool in Bowie. The Barracudas were leading 236-172 toward the end of the backstroke competition when a series of powerful thunderstorms prompted officials to call off the meet. All events in the fly, freestyle and breaststroke were completed.

BSR was led by Spencer Yaculak, the day's only triple winner, with victories in the 9-10 year-old 50-meter freestyle, breast and backstroke events. Belair's double winners included Kelly Cooke, Sarah Smith, Matt Kaercher, Geordie Enoch, Grace Kelly and Michael Cooke.

Greenbelt's Michael Stevens turned in the strongest swim of the day, a blistering 32.65 seconds in the 11-12 year-old boys 50-meter backstroke, breaking a 25-year old BSR pool record.

Belair's next opponent is Whitehall on June 27 at BSR. Whitehall also won its first meet, defeating Montpelier 289-275.  Pray for better weather.
